Gene Brownell
Gene Brownell is a 1968 graduate of Northern State University with a BS Degree in Secondary Education with major fields in Health & PE/Social Studies.  He received his MS Degree in Administration and Health/Physical Education in 1977.  Gene taught and coached at every level, AA-A-B, in South Dakota for twenty-seven years.  He has experience in coaching basketball, cross-country, football and track & field.  He was named Coach of the Year for SD High School Girls Track and Field in 1995 and again in 1996.  He currently serves as the District Athletic Director and has done so since the fall of 1998.  Gene was chosen as the South Dakota Athletic Director of the Year for 2004.

Rose DuBois
Rose DuBois received both her bachelor of science degree in Physical Education and master of science degree  in counseling at SDSU. Rose has taught biology and physical education at Central High School (South Dakota’s largest high school) since 1979.  During high school, Rose was named most improved in gymnastics and most valuable in track (1974 & 1975).  She broke both the state and school record in the 440 yd dash.  One of her college track relay teams also broke the school record.  She has coached/advised/officiated numerous sports and activities.  Her greatest coaching achievement was leading the Cobbler gymnasts to their first ever girl’s state gymnastics championship in 1991.  She also coached the first six individual champions in the sport.  Rose was named Gymnastics Official of the Year in 2000 and was the State Meet Referee in 2002-2003.   In February, 2009, Rose was honored with the Judges Leadership Award by the SD Gymnastics Coaches Assoc. The SDHSAA also honored her with the Distinguished Service Award (the highest award they give) and this year she was named SD High School PE Teacher of the Year.  Rose also currently serves on the SD Board for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (AAHPERD). Rose has two children, Melissa and Austin. Both were honor roll students and actively involved in extra-curricular activities during high school. Melissa is the only gymnast to have scored a perfect ten on the uneven bars in SD high school gymnastics and holds many school and state records.  She is a six time All-American collegiate gymnast and has won three collegiate national championships.  Austin competed/participated in golf, football, basketball, and drama while in high school.  He currently a pre-med student in college. Rose’s life and family revolves around education and extracurricular activities.

Mark Murphy
Graduated – BS Secondary Education – Social Studies – Major, Physical Education – Minor 1976 – Northern State University, Masters in Secondary Teaching (1986 – NSU), Masters in Leadership and Administration – (NSU – 2006)  Just completed 32 years in field of education and coaching.  Taught and coached at Hurley HS, Miller HS, Aberdeen Roncalli HS.  Head football coach in nine man, eleven “A”, and eleven “AA”levels in South Dakota.  Coached basketball for almost 30 seasons on the freshman, sophomore, and junior varsity levels.  Coached the shot put and discus for over a 10 year period at Aberdeen Central H.S. Married with three children who were fortunate to compete at the Division II college level in the sports of football, basketball, track and cross country.

Bob Winter
Bob has been teaching and coaching in the Yankton School District for the past  46 years.  From 1989 to present time he has been the  Activities Director for the Yankton School District.  Coached cross country 1966-1969 (Three ESD conference championships and two state runner-ups) Sub varsity football coach three years, swim team coach two years, baseball coach eight years, assistant Varsity track coach twenty six years (three state championships), Hurdle coach with 9 state place finishers, and basketball following:
Championships:  Basketball: Boys & girls combined varsity record 473 wins 116 losses 80% wins; Eight state Girls South Dakota class AA (large school) championships (1975; 1977, 1978, 1979, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1988) and One boys South Dakota Class AA state champions (1974); six runner-ups, and eight other state team appearances.  Coached seven Div. I players and dozens of Div. II and III players.  Highlights:  From 1966 until 2002 owned and operated the Bob Winter Basketball Camps with as many as 800 players a summer participating.  South Dakota High School Activities Association committees:  (1) Ad Hoc Chairman for in and out of season rules; (2) Committee for Women’s In Sports Elite 15 Awards; (3) 12 years basketball advisory committee; (4) Hosted numbers athletic and fine arts district, region, and state meets.  Various awards:  Siouxland Coach of the Year, Three times National District Coach of the Year, 1987 National Girls Basketball Coach of the Year, SD Biology Teacher of the Year,  Yankton Education Association Teacher of the Year; Kellogg’s Coach of the Year; SD Coaches Hall of Fame; SD Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame; SD Sportswriters Hall of Fame; Yankton College Athletic Hall of Fame; SD Regional Athletic Director of the Year;  NHSCA Hall of Fame; Speaker at hundreds of clinics, graduation, and athletic and community banquets and programs.  Education:  Graduated from Wessington Springs High School and Yankton College (BA 1963) MA (1967) from University of South Dakota and 90 plus advanced MA hours in science, education, and administration.
Playing Career:  Played high school football, basketball, track, and baseball.  Played college football, basketball, track, and baseball.  Coaching Philosophy:  I believe strongly that activities are a means by which students learn new life experiences.  This is especially true with discipline, teamwork, and goal setting.  Activities are an educational tool and NOT an end in itself.  Coaches and athletes must both understand basketball is just a game.  In the realm of life, basketball is just an educational experience.  Coaches and players must all keep this in perspective.   Family:  Wife Carol (35 years in elementary education):  Daughters  Jodi Tjeerdsma — Insurance expert in hospitalization insurance in Sioux Falls; Husband Ross is Heating Engineer;  Tami Streich– Manages the Sioux Valley Wellness Center Children’s’ Unit in Sioux Falls; Husband Brad ownes and operates Streich Construction;  Misty Nockels and husband Jon own and operate Four Seasons Fabric Store in Yankton;  Grandsons – Sky Winter Nockels (8) , Alexander America Nockels (4) Granddaughter (3) Noelle Sunshine Nockels, and New Grandson Asher Forest Nockels (4 months).
