This independent study course is designed to help teachers in all academic areas, not just reading instructors, to broaden their knowledge on how to motivate students to read in any subject area.
So long as teachers are promoters of learning, they also need to be promoters of reading. This course promotes reading in all subject areas by covering concepts, tools and strategies that teachers of all subjects can implement in their own classrooms.
In this course you will:
- Learn new strategies to motivate students of all reading levels, in all subject areas to become better readers
- Create and develop your own reading ideas and examples to implement in the classroom
- Reflect on current strategies used in the classroom and understand how to modify those strategies to create stronger reading environments
- Develop reading techniques unique to your own classroom subject area
- Acquire skills beneficial not only for your students, but for yourself as an educator as well.
- Reflect on the effects of implementing particular reading techniques in the classroom
- Learn practical techniques to improve students’ vocabulary development, phonics and comprehension
- Use assessment tools to diagnose individual readers’ problems and implement strategies for solutions to these problems

“I think that this course was instrumental for me to take. I have been teaching for three years, so any type of information that is handed to me regarding reading in the classroom is always valuable. Throughout this course, I was able to learn different assessments I could use, ways to differentiate within my small groups, and to keep the material engaging for my students. This course will not only benefit my purpose in education, but it will benefit my students as well.” Jim Morey, W. Burlington, IA

“This class helped reinforce the importance of teaching reading in every course. I feel, as a content teacher of a different area, I can help to strengthen the reading abilities of the students that I have. It challenged me to find ways to use the current curriculum that I have and create lessons that will infuse reading skills as well. I am motivated to share my ideas with other science and social studies teachers as well as my literacy partner to help students to continue to grow in reading comprehension.” Ashley Flatebo, Mason City, IA

“This was my first independent study course – with my work load and family life, it was wonderful to not have to be on the computer every night like I had to with other online courses. So, I definitely enjoyed the format and being able to work at my own pace. Because I am a Language Arts teacher, the content was eye-opening and applicable to what I teach all year long – I enjoyed taking the strategies and ideas as I learned them to try in my classroom. The charts and assessment tools are definitely ones that I will adapt to meet the needs of my students.” Tricia Wiese, Orange City, IA
