This independent study course is designed to help teachers in all academic areas, not just reading instructors, to broaden their knowledge on how to motivate students to read in any subject area.
So long as teachers are promoters of learning, they also need to be promoters of reading. This course promotes reading in all subject areas by covering concepts, tools and strategies that teachers of all subjects can implement in their own classrooms.
In this course you will:
- Learn new strategies to motivate students of all reading levels, in all subject areas to become better readers
- Create and develop your own reading ideas and examples to implement in the classroom
- Reflect on current strategies used in the classroom and understand how to modify those strategies to create stronger reading environments
- Develop reading techniques unique to your own classroom subject area
- Acquire skills beneficial not only for your students, but for yourself as an educator as well.
- Reflect on the effects of implementing particular reading techniques in the classroom
- Learn practical techniques to improve students’ vocabulary development, phonics and comprehension
- Use assessment tools to diagnose individual readers’ problems and implement strategies for solutions to these problems

“I enjoyed taking this course! I took Reading for Success in all Classrooms to receive credit hours needed to renew my teaching license, but ended up getting so much more out of it. The class was fit well into my schedule. I have five kids, ranging from 14 to 7 year old triplets, so my time is valuable! I was able to complete the classwork after the kids went to bed, or riding in the car to their many activities. I would definitely take an independent study course again. It was also nice to learn new strategies to use with my students. I work with students of many different needs and abilities. Learning new ways to differentiate lessons to better meet all of their needs was a huge benefit that I received from taking this course.” -Emily E., OH

“I thought this course was very beneficial to my reading classroom. I was able to pull many strategies and ideas to incorporate into my classroom. This course will benefit me to become a stronger, more confident reading teacher. I truly think that veteran teachers often get caught up in all of the things going on around them and forget to look back at the basics that we l earned when we were new teachers. This course gave me review and new outlooks for teaching reading strategies in the classroom.” -Tamela K., NE
