If you ask a student what makes him or her successful in school, you probably won’t hear about the great textbooks or lectures they heard.
Most likely you will hear something like, “It was all Mrs. Smith. She just never gave up on me.” What students take away from a successful education usually centers on a personal connection with a teacher who instilled passion and inspiration for their subject. Successful teachers go beyond what is expected from their students in a variety of ways. “Beyond Teaching” is about not just teaching students the curriculum, but also connecting with them on emotional and mental levels.
In this course you will…
- Reflect on current teaching strategies, as well as how you connect with students and maintain relationships with them in the classroom.
- Explore new ways to avoid burnout
- Analyze how powerful language, listening and other communication behaviors impact student success in the classroom.
- Engage in new classroom activities and reflect on how these changes will impact your classroom.
- Explain how the techniques discussed in the course can be applied to your current and/or future classroom.
- Critique current classroom strategies in regards to emotional and mental connections with students.
- Develop classroom activities that focus on building connections with students so they feel comfortable expressing themselves in a variety of ways.
- Modify current classroom techniques to improve connections with students.
- Compare and contrast current classroom strategies with the new information presented in the course content

I really like how all of the information was all in one spot. I thought the videos were very beneficial and were filled with a ton of good information. I really liked how the class was set up. All of the information had a real life feel to it. There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about the course. I think this is the best graduate course I have taken because it didn’t feel like busy work. It felt real and made me think about how I can apply it. This course will benefit me because the information in this course is suitable for all class levels and subjects. Colton E., NE

Another great course from BAGT. The videos were all easy to follow and the questions that were included were both thought provoking as well as applicable to my situation. There are a lot of things I will take from this course and immediately implement into my classroom this year. Tony N., NE.

This course was helpful in getting a person to understand the difference between sympathy and empathy and when and where they come in to play. It gave very helpful advice that can be put to use immediately in the classroom, with the most important thing being to listen to others. You don’t necessarily need to talk, but it is very important to listen. Betsy S., NE.

Hi Bob and Ann-Marie–
This will be my final course, as I am nearing the end of my teaching career; I am as far over on the salary schedule that I can be without getting my doctorate, and I have also recertified my teaching license for the final time. Thanks for all of the help and advice you have given to me, and thanks for offering these classes. I will continue to spread the word among teachers I know. Best to both of you. Jim G., MN.
